It follows massive farmer protests that erupted this summer in response to a government plan to reduce nitrogen emissions by 50% by 2030.
Farmers believe the measure unfairly targets the agricultural sector and blames them for the largest portion of nitrogen emissions in the country.
“The government will acquire large nitrogen emitters as part of a voluntary and one-time offer, said Nitrogen Minister Christianne van der Wal-Zeggelink in a letter to the parliament in the Hague,” Bloomberg noted.
