Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer (D) Punched During Public Event

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer (D) was assaulted by a bystander while attending an event at Fourth Street Live Saturday evening.

Fischer is ‘fine’ after the incident and is resuming his normal duties after the attack.

WHAS 11 aired this video report:

It’s unknown how the bystander breached the mayor’s security and escaped without being detained.

The Courier Journal had further details:

The security breach is particularly alarming in the wake of the February attack on Democratic mayor candidate Craig Greenberg, who was nearly gunned down in his campaign headquarters.

Jessica Wethington, director of communications for the mayor’s office, declined to answer questions raised by The Courier Journal, instead issuing a statement that said the mayor is “fine.”

“The mayor says he is glad he can still take a punch,” she said.

The glib response doesn’t address the fact that the attacker could just have easily been armed with a knife or gun, resulting in a potentially much more serious outcome.

Immediately after the incident, Fischer was evaluated by paramedics and “it was determined that no further treatment was necessary,” Wethington added.

Wethington said a security detail was with the mayor at Fourth Street Live Saturday. She declined to comment on whether he had previously been threatened or if any changes would be made to the mayor’s security detail.

Craig Greenberg, the Democratic candidate in Louisville’s mayoral race, tweeted in response to the incident on Saturday evening.

“Tonight my thoughts are with the Mayor and his family. Whoever is responsible for this assault needs to turn themselves in. We cannot solve our disagreements with violence,” he said.

Democratic Mayor Greg Fischer is term-limited and cannot seek reelection.
